Message from the Head of Department

The Department of English is an integral academic unit of the yobe state university. the institution was established in 2007 with a view to providing opportunity for the indigenes and indeed all eligible candidates to a qualitative academic programme that is entrepreneurially driven. Academic activities for the degree programme were temporarily suspended due to number of technical deficiencies  that might truncate the vision of producing competent and adequately  qualified  graduates. However, in order to resuscitate the teaching and research activities in 2009, the government of yobe state embarked on aggressive physical developments of the institution, provided infrastratural facilities and recruited highly qualified personnel to actualize the vision that the founding fathers set. the department of english is a beneficiary of this monumental achievement that has consistently been making teaching and learning conducive. Since my assumption of duty as the head, i found the philosophy and missions of the department in consonance with those of other universities nationwide and are the heart of classical english studies in language and literature. the research and teaching programme are well structured and consistent with best  practices in english language and literature. the reseach and teaching programme are well structured and of consistent with the best practices in english studies. the academic arena is well kept and functional. The department has large book holding, e-book resources, a growing number of journals and the departmental library. The management deserves commendation for making the university a model.
I must quickly mention that in thinking and documenting this hardly material for keeping students abreast of useful information, i am heavily  to faculty members of the english department for giving generously their time and insight. Staff members have graciouosly endured the pain of having to write, re-write , edit, proof- read the material without  any sign of unwillingness. The enthusiasm with  which  staffers  are working to make the department a robust centre of teaching and learning is better imagined than explained. I am thankful to the acting dean of faculty of arts and education, Dr. Muhammad Maidugu for making our faculty  a hub of intellectual activities and a pleasant arena for exchange  of ideas through exemplary leadership and covivial atmosphere. the appreciation is inconclusive without acknowledging the enviable contributions of our visiting lecturers  and those on sabatical, at one time or the other, from sisters universities. They include among others Professor Idris Amali, Professor Alhaji Maina Gimba, Professor Rotimi Bamidele Badejo, Professor James Abah, Professor Amina Bashir Abubakar, Dr. Ajala Emmanuel all from university of maiduguri, Professor Ibrahim Bello Kano from Bayero University, Kano and Dr. Abdullahi-Idiagbon Mohammed Sanni from the university of Ilorin. with their wealth of exprience and expertise, they nurtured the department from infancy.  I have a high hope that studens in the department of English as well  as other interested individuals will find this handbook a compelling reading material and essentially invaluable for consultations.
